  Karate Kat

Times tablES program

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the target age group for Karate Kat?
According to the Australia Curriculum, multiplication facts should be introduced to the classroom in Year 3.
"Recall multiplication facts of two, three, five and ten and related division facts (ACMNA056)"
Times tables also feature explicitly in Year 4:
"Level 4 – Recall multiplication facts up to 10 × 10 and related division facts (ACMNA075)"
It also helps target other areas of the Mathematics curriculum too:
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication using efficient mental and written strategies and appropriate digital technologies (ACMNA057)

What if a student knows their times tables, but just can't get through the level?
Great question!  This is up to you and your discretion.  We have 'passed' students through to the next level if they just can't get there but we know, from monitoring them closely, that they know their tables.
Is is because their typing/input of facts is slow?  Buddy them up with someone to type if for them, or you can input it for them too.

What happens when a student completes Karate Kat and achieve their Black Belt?
That's it; they are done!  They know their tables and related division facts.   Move them on to working on other areas of Mathematics.

How long does it take to learn all tables?
Really, that depends on each individual.  Some children will progress quickly through this, whilst others will be slower.  It is not a competition, and should not be used that way.  Each child should be encouraged to just do their best and learn at their own pace.

Why use this program?
Every year at parent teacher interviews, times tables comes up as part of the discussion.  Parents value times tables, and from teaching, we all know that quick and accurate recall of times tables facts is advantageous in Mathematics.   This doesn't replace good teaching - it enhances it.  Students still need to work towards understanding what multiplication is all about, this simply encourages and motivates students to memorise tables facts quickly and accurately.

Our program is quick, fun, tried and has been developed with student feedback.  It is individualised and gives direction to learning.  And that's just some of the benefits!
